Sep. 21--DARK AND VIOLENT, David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises" is a mood piece that warns, in a more ominous way than could be imagined, that the Russians are coming -- again.

A film noir set in sleazy sections of modern London, it reveals, outwardly, a Russian criminal underground involved with sexual slavery and drugs. Inwardly, it suggests a world in which the only way to fight evil is with evil.
