Sep. 21--DARK AND VIOLENT, David Cronenberg's "Eastern Promises" is a mood piece that warns, in a more ominous way than could be imagined, that the Russians are coming -- again.
A film noir set in sleazy sections of modern London, it reveals, outwardly, a Russian criminal underground involved with sexual slavery and drugs. Inwardly, it suggests a world in which the only way to fight evil is with evil.
Viggo Mortensen, an actor who emerged as a serious talent in Cronenberg's superb "A History of Violence" two years ago, has another intriguing, but not nearly as compelling, role as the mob's "driver," who also happens to be ...
