HISTORICALLY, most induced molting programs used in the commercial egg industry involved a feed withdrawal period. The feed withdrawal was usually 4-10 days in length, but in some cases, feed withdrawal was continued until the flock achieved a target bodyweight loss.
Animal rights groups have voiced concerns about using this practice. The United Egg Producers recommended that producers and university researchers work together to develop alternative molting techniques that do not involve the use of feed withdrawal.
