Article: Looking back at our beginnings: a personal history of Cineaste: straight from the source: the inside story of a movie-loving kid's political radicalization and the birth and growth of this magazine over the last forty year.

To commemorate our fortieth anniversary, my coeditors have prevailed on me to provide a personal account of this magazine's murky prehistory, of how and why Cineaste first came about. After all, many of our current readers--and even some members of our editorial staff became familiar with the magazine only in the Eighties or Nineties. At the risk of providing Too Much Information, however, I feel I must go back to when it all really started, to that moment when I first got seriously interested in film. The embarrassing truth, I'm afraid, is that the genesis of Cineaste can be traced directly back to ... Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine.

Well, sort of.
