LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets Inc. has begun offering seven free generic oral antibiotics, many of them prescribed for children.
The retailer is giving away supplies of up to 14 days of amoxicillin, cephalexin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP), ciprofloxacin (excluding ciprofloxacin XR), penicillin VK, ampicillin and erythromycin (excluding Ery-Tab). The drugs account for almost half of the generic pediatric prescriptions filled at Publix' 684 pharmacies.
In the Midwest, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer Inc. has been giving away the same drugs since October.
