Sep. 21--It's amazing, when you think about it, that it took this long for the movies to give us a guy so tough that he can defend himself -- unarmed and naked in a Russian steam bath -- against three armed killers out to send him to that great shvitz in the sky.
If that isn't a scene for the movie anthologies -- the R-rated ones anyway -- nothing is.
"Eastern Promises" (miserable title, good movie) doesn't waste any time telling you how brutal it is. In its opening minutes, the son of one Russian mobster bloodily slits another's throat as he sits in the barber's chair.
What, you ask astutely, could that possibly ...
