Sep. 23--Ryan Howard stood at the plate one strike away from tying the single-season record for whiffs. Down 1-2 in the count, he fouled off two balls against Washington reliever Chris Schroder to stay alive in the 10th inning.
Pitch No. 6 provided Howard with another chance to play the hero. He delivered by lining an RBI single to center field, negating the four strikeouts he took into the at-bat.
The Phillies tacked on two more runs to earn a 4-1, 10-inning win Saturday at RFK Stadium, keeping their amazing road run going.
