Pact ends NHL lockout
Narrowly averting the unprecedented cancellation of an entire season, some 650 players represented by the National Hockey League (NHL) Players Association ratified a 6-year contract with NHL team owners that ended the owners' 103-day lockout of the players. Teams will play an abbreviated 48-game regular season schedule, to be followed by the playoffs. The two sides compromised on a wide range of issues including free agency, salary arbitration, and the rookie salary schedule, but the contract did not contain the controversial salary cap that owners had sought to control escalating labor costs.
