To understand coastal piloting requires only a current navigation chart and a few simple tools.
The first tool is a compass and a compass deviation card (See "Magnetic Compass," TBM, July 1993). The second tool is the most recent edition of the navigation chart for your area plus two U.S. Government publications: Chart No. 1, listing all symbols and abbreviations used on today's charts, and Dates Of Latest Editions, listing the latest edition of each chart published. Always make sure the chart you are using is the latest available edition.
