TWO things Argentina's voters have rarely been accused of in the past are political maturity and a respect for economic reality. Now it is time to reconsider. In this month's presidential election, which took place barely two months after the introduction of a tough austerity programme, four out of five Argentines voted for either Carlos Menem or Jose Bordon, both of whom vowed to continue the same economic medicine. By giving Mr Menem a sizeable first- round victory, Argentines also showed a clear desire for continuity, returning to office the man whose government had proved itself competent at handling the economy (see page 70).
