The British has provided the UK housing industry with an interesting challenge: By 2016, it wants all new housing to be carbon neutral. Its new Code for Sustainable Homes is divided into six different levels. A house trying to meet Level One requirements would need to have a 10 percent improvement over current regulations, while a Level Six residence, which is expected to be mandatory by 2016, has to meet a zero-carbon emission rating. The strategies to reduce carbon emissions cover everything from water use, waste generation and appliances through the energy used to manufacture construction materials and the energy used in heating, lighting and ventilation.
