In 1973 the first exhibition of Virginia painted furniture was presented at what is now the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum in Williamsburg, Virginia. (1) Several groups of furniture included in the show have since been discussed in this publication, including dower chests and pie safes from Wythe County and painted furniture by Johannes Spitler of Shenandoah County. (2) Also in the exhibition were the two small boxes with stenciled, stippled, and freehand decoration shown here in Figures 1 and 2, which were reported to be from Shenandoah County, but about which, little else was known.
