Sep. 25--It's dated 1297 and, as documents go, its significance is profound. It did nothing less than lay the foundation for the fundamental principles of English law.
It's the Magna Carta, but like so many "priceless" artifacts these days, it's being sold to the highest bidder. Sotheby's will conduct an auction in New York City on Dec. 10.
Current owner of this particular copy of the Magna Carta is H. Ross Perot, whose Perot Foundation purchased the manuscript in 1984 and offered it to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., where it has been on exhibit ever since.
