Environment and Tourism Minister Martinus van Schalkwyk has urged a UN summit on climate change to come up with a new agreement to curb global warming when the Kyoto Treaty expires in 2012.
"We have to reach agreement by the end of 2009 on a fair, effective, flexible and in-clusive framework that builds on the existing climate regime," Van Schalkwyk said at the UN yesterday.
When they meet in Bali at a UN convention at end of December, "we must agree to a roadmap for negotiations for the next two years", the minister said. "We have a common responsibility to act in accordance with our respective national capabilities."
