Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that most commonly affects persons whose ancestors come from Africa, South of Central America (especially Panama), Caribbean islands, Mediterranean countries (e.g., Turkey, Greece, and Italy), India, and Saudi Arabia (1). Approximately 70,000 persons in the United States (primarily black of Hispanic) have sickle cell disease. In addition, approximately 2 million persons have sickle cell trait and can have children with sickle cell trait or sickle cell disease (1).
