The lifelong impact of childhood experiences: a population health perspective.

A variety of childhood factors were analyzed as to their influence on the development of children and on the health of children when they become adults. Physical factors such as the amount of lead in placental blood and social factors such as social class status, preschool education, and stability of the home environment were examined. Upper class children ranked higher in good adult health than middle class children who ranked higher than poor children. One study suggests that not only does higher class status protect children from health risks but also smooths the stress of childbirth which sometimes leads to later health problems.
