Environment and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schal-kwyk has urged a UN summit on climate change to come up with a new global agreement to curb global warming when the Kyoto treaty expires in 2012.
"We have to reach an agreement by the end of 2009 on a fair, effective and inclusive framework that builds on the existing climate regime," Van Schalkwyk said on Monday.
"When we meet in Bali" at a UN convention at the end of December, "we must agree to a roadmap for negotiations for the next two years", he said.
More than 150 nations took part in the one-day summit, some at head-of-government level, such as Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel.
