Sep. 27--The art of composing music has changed little since Douglas Townsend started his career nearly 70 years ago.
What's different now is Townsend himself, a New York resident who works as an adjunct professor of music at the University of Bridgeport. At 85, he tires more easily than he used to. On a good day, he said, he puts in four to eight hours working on compositions. Still, he manages to get the job done, with the help of a little self-discipline. "It's just a matter of applying the two seats -- pants to chair," Townsend quipped during a phone interview this week.
