Sep. 28--Abundant foliage, plentiful rainfall and cooling weather have set the stage for a number of significant plant diseases this fall.
Most pathogens that attack plants are fungi that spread by windblown or rain-splashed spores. Lawnmowers and other landscape equipment spread others.
Two lawn diseases already are showing up at significant levels in landscapes: gray leaf spot and brown patch. Fungi that favor wet conditions cause them.
The pathogen spreads when a raindrop hits an infected leaf and splashes spores to adjacent leaves. Gray leaf spot causes numerous small, gray lesions or spots on the leaves, ...
