Sep. 28--The Buffalo control board has stood shoulder to shoulder with city administrators to resist raises for uniformed employees, telling arbitrators that taxpayers could not afford the rising payroll costs.
But the Erie County control board sat it out this week as the union representing Erie County sheriff's deputies asked arbitrators for raises, retroactive to 2005 and 2006, that would cost $3.7 million.
Why wouldn't the state-appointed control board, empaneled to stabilize county finances, help the government save money by bolstering its argument against pay raises?
