The word "board"--as in board of directors--comes from an Old English word that means food, and by extension table. Hence, a group who met at a table came to be known as a board. Interestingly too, the phrase "above board," meaning honest and open, comes from the same idea in that anything that was laid on the table was therefore in the open for everyone to see--it was above board.
Talk to a handful of general managers about what it takes to have a successful relationship with a board of directors, and honesty and open communication will likely top the list.
