The daughter of a Palestinian father and an American mother, Naomi Shihab Nye grew up in Jerusalem and San Antonio. As an Arab American, she is interested in the ways heritage and history contribute to personal identity. As a poet and writer, she has explored how writing helps us discover our truest selves, and helps us connect to one another. She has written more than 20 books, including award-winning poetry anthologies and novels for young adults. Her new book of essays is called I'll Ask You Three Times, Are You OK? Tales of Driving and Being Driven. Shihab Nye will be this year's guest judge for our Student Writing Contest, Treasured Objects. (See page 24.) Check out ...
