"He was not a man I would put in charge of artists."
The words are those of Nora Heysen, the Australian artist, and she was speaking about John Treloar, long-time Director of the Australian War Memorial. Heysen made the remark in 1989 in an interview conducted by Catherine Speck, an art historian. (1) Treloar was by then long dead but Heysen evidently remembered him well. The two did not get on. Heysen worked as an official war artist from October 1944 until February 1946, answering to Treloar. He applied an intense scrutiny to her activities which, not surprisingly, she resented.
