Sep. 28--Sales of new autos plunged 17 percent in Orange County in August, one of the steepest drops in memory, the Orange County Automobile Dealers Association reported Thursday.

For all vehicles, 2007 has been a tough year in Orange County. New registrations through August fell to 115,947 vehicles, down 8.7 percent from 2006. In all 2006, sales slipped 2 percent to 182,650 compared to 2005.
