Sep. 29--PITTSBURGH -- When the Cardinals acquired him July 31 in what was thought a negligible waiver deadline deal, Joel Pineiro was a man without a role. Because of it, Pineiro also possessed an unknown future.
Eleven starts later, Pineiro has placed himself on the Cardinals' winter radar.
Pineiro only confirmed his new organization's positive impression with Thursday's eight shutout innings against the New York Mets. The outing left Pineiro 6-4 with a 3.96 ERA since being acquired from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named. The Cardinals are 7-4 in his starts and increasingly intrigued by the notion of him in their 2008 rotation.
