Sep. 30--The sound of drums and chanting echoed through the Odessa College SportsCenter as the eighth annual Permian Basin Intertribal Powwow began Saturday.
"This is a gathering of Native Americans in Odessa and from other areas," organizer Vic Sylvester said. "We have 11,000 registered Native Americans in the Permian Basin, and this is a way for them to meet up with other Native Americans."
Sylvester said the powwow was a way to talk with old friends while going back to their roots.
"This is a gathering, this is like a family reunion," he said. "This is a way to renew the old ways."
