Apple picking: A family tradition.

Oct. 1--WINTHROP -- The weather was perfect Sunday to engage in a traditional fall family pastime -- or start a new one.

Dozens flocked to Brookdale Apple Orchard to pick their own apples. Some had been frequenting the orchard for years, others were enjoying their first visit.

Edward J. "Joe" Carr and his wife Margaret G. have run the 10-acre orchard on County Route 49 with about 1,000 trees since 1977. The Carr's purchased about 50 acres of land in 1965.

Mr. Carr said the best part of the business is people who come to pick. Offering pick-your-own apples is the "bread and butter" of the orchard, which is run solely by the volunteer help ...
