WASHINGTON -- Fr. Michael Kelly kicked aside the empty bottle of Wild Irish Rose, never once looking down or breaking his determined pace. It was Good Friday. He was leading 50 or so congregants through the parish neighborhood for the Stations of the Cross, escorted by members of the District of Columbia police.
And so they walked over broken glass and recited written prayers and sang solemn songs.
