North Charleston, S.C., to raze deteriorating Pier Alpha.

Oct. 1--Much of the waterfront section of Pier Alpha on the former Charleston Naval Base has collapsed, threatening to slide into the Cooper River and endanger shipping lanes if not addressed soon, the U.S. Coast Guard has told North Charleston, which owns the pier.

City officials say they will tear down the crumbling, 500-foot wood and concrete structure near Noisette Creek at an estimated cost of between $1 million and $1.5 million.

"It is not in good condition," said Ray Anderson, assistant to North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. "We can't leave it out there in any fashion."
