NEW YORK - The dress business has been a victim of its own success this spring.

As an item, dresses keep chugging along as one of the steadiest sellers in an otherwise spotty apparel market. But because they have been so hot for several seasons, many sportswear manufacturers have offered dresses in their collections, and this competition has siphoned some business from dress departments, according to store executives.

One retailer said dress manufacturers are suffering from a bout of apathy. He feels the young sportswear houses are coming up with the freshest looks in dresses, particularly as denim plays a bigger role in the dress market.
