Mystery shrouds drowning: Victim remembered as supportive friend.

Oct. 2--Authorities are still sorting out what caused a former Marine and Iraq veteran to plunge from the Cass Street bridge to his death early Sunday while in La Crosse for Oktoberfest.

Christopher B. Melancon, 24, was a Milwaukee native who was living in Bloomington, Minn., with a longtime friend still in the Marines.

Anthony Triplett said they both came to La Crosse for Oktoberfest, but became separated late Saturday night. He did not learn of his roommate's death until Melancon's mother called from Milwaukee.

Melancon was seen falling from the bridge about 1:30 a.m. Sunday into a Mississippi River slough, according to La Crosse police. ...
