Oct. 2--A San Mateo High senior realized a dream at the age of 17.
Equestrian Katharine James qualified for the ASPCA Maclay National Championship. On Sept. 15, she galloped to it on the back of her horse, Lorelei, when the pair earned a sixth-place in her class at the Oaks Blenheim Fall Tournament in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
"I was overwhelmed," the Hillsborough-native said. "I have been working for this for so long."
James plans to compete at the annual tournament on Nov. 3 in Syracuse, N.Y. To put her accomplishment into perspective, Discovery-Channel series "The Ride to Maclay" refers to qualifiers as "the best of the best of ...
