Beverly Perdue makes bid for governor official, stresses support for health care and education.

Oct. 2--Beverly Perdue remembers that when she first ran for the state House 20 years ago, detractors laughed and scoffed at the notion of a woman from rural eastern North Carolina being elected to such a high office.

On Monday night, with about 600 cheering, sign-waving supporters packed shoulder-to-shoulder in the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center, she made her bid for governor official.

Perdue is the state's lieutenant governor, the first woman to hold that office.

During a two-hour barbecue to kick off her 2008 gubernatorial bid, she spoke to the crowd for about 15 minutes. She stressed issues such as health care and education, ...
