GM's Indianapolis stamping plant may have 4 years left to remain open.

Oct. 2--United Auto Workers leaders say General Motors' massive Indianapolis metal stamping plant probably will stay open. But analysts say it has one problem: lack of future orders.

A provision in a proposed labor contract promises no future product after 2011 for the Near-Westside plant and would allow GM to consider closing or selling the 850-employee facility after that date.

Senior UAW leaders in Detroit have assured UAW Local 23 there is a strong likelihood that Indianapolis stamping will remain open beyond 2011, said Kenneth Walton, a UAW Local 23 shop committeeman at Indianapolis stamping.
