Well-connected developers turn potential white elephant into moneymaker.

Sep. 30--AUGUSTA, Maine -- City, state and area business leaders responded as if it were a natural disaster when Sanmina-SCI announced in 2002 that it was closing its computer manufacturing plant in north Augusta.

They all worried the 317,000-square-foot building -- with 10 times more floor space than the Augusta Civic Center -- would become a capital city white elephant.

The city even made a secret offer to buy the plant to prevent it from becoming a low-value warehouse or distribution center with few jobs and plummeting tax value.
