With three schools in works, district budget to be tight in Clarke County, Ga.

Oct. 1--Interim school superintendent James Simms finds himself sitting at the helm of Clarke County Schools as the district embarks on its largest expansion in almost two decades.

A total of three new schools may be built in the next five years -- two elementaries and one experimental high school.

But it will be costly. Besides construction costs in the millions of dollars, Simms estimates each school will cost about a $1 million a year to staff and operate.

While Simms is optimistic, he warns the district will have to tread carefully during this period of expansion to remain on solid financial ground.
