Oct. 2--OCALA -- The heat of budget cuts is strong enough to melt ice.
For the past five holiday seasons, children and adults have laced up skates and tested their gracefulness atop a temporary ice rink downtown. But city officials, looking to cut spending, have nixed the city-sponsored treat known as Ocala on Ice.
"It's been a positive thing for the city, for downtown and for citizens," City Manager Paul Nugent said. "But we really didn't want to go out and ask for donations because things are tight for the community."
During the 2005-06 season, Ocala on Ice lost about $15,000. Last year, it cost the city roughly $140,000. Revenues ...
