OPINION: Warrantless wiretaps: Rethinking is in order.

Oct. 2--On our op-ed page today -- next door to the right -- we publish an article by former National Security Council Senior Director Philip Bobbitt, who now labors as a professor at Columbia University.

Darn it, Bobbitt makes me second-guess myself on the nettlesome subject of warrantless wiretapping.

For months I, along with scores of other civil libertarians, have railed against the Bush administration's authorization of wiretaps and other means of secret surveillance against U.S. citizens without getting warrants in court, even from the secret tribunal set up in the Foreign Surveillance Act explicitly for the purpose.
