Baby speech therapy: Speech pathologists help developing babies gain muscle strength, swallowing capability.

Oct. 2--Reagan Whytlaw said parents often don't know what to make of it when they learn a speech therapist is going to be working with their newborn.

"I've had several say, 'Are you going to have my baby talking?' " she said. "They're very surprised that a speech therapist is helping with the care of their baby."

But Whytlaw, 29, said it's not speech she's trying to help the babies with -- not in the short term. While her work helps many of the same muscles in the neck as traditional speech therapy, she's trying to help premature babies learn to chew, swallow and suck.
