Oct. 2--OLYMPIA -- Olympia School District teachers in the fifth through eighth grades have started meeting monthly to discuss how well a new, controversial middle school math curriculum is working.
And so far, district officials haven't heard many concerns from those teachers about the Connected Mathematics Project 2 curriculum, said Monica West, an Olympia math teacher on special assignment. The textbooks emphasize math concepts rather than basic skills -- a format that some parents oppose.
