AKRON, Ohio _ What do a firefighter, a veterinarian, a judge, an unemployed bartender, a stay-at-home mother of three and a print-shop employee have in common?
All are coaches for hire _ part-time area school employees and part of a trend sweeping the state and nation.
None of the six teaches as a profession. In fact, they do not teach at all.
For example, Darryl Anderson works 24 hours on, 48 hours off as a firefighter in Warren. But despite other responsibilities as a husband and a father of two, he spends dozens of hours each week during the school year coaching the boys basketball team at Central-Hower in Akron, Ohio.
