Oct. 2--ALHAMBRA, Calif. -- When Winton Gaun, an AT&T sales coach manager at a call center in Alhambra, called a customer with a problem, he never expected to find a friend.
Gaun helped the elderly customer and then listened to her talk about her life. Her husband had died a few years ago, she had no children and she spoke little English.
"She felt lonely and was very upset about everything," said Gaun, who made that call five years ago. "I told her, 'You have to take care of yourself, because your husband is looking down on you."'
The call center where Gaun works assists California customers who speak Cantonese or Mandarin Chinese.
