Oct. 2--AUTHORHOUSE CASHES IN ON SELF-PUBLISHING: We all like to think there's a book inside us, if we could find a publisher.

AuthorHouse has freed a lot of frustrated authors -- and figured out how to make it pay.

When AuthorHouse started out as 1st Books, self-publishing was for the rich and/or desperate. The Bloomington-based company has changed that equation and hit its stride in its 10th year. While President Bryan S. Smith won't discuss revenue, he did say the company is not far from $50 million a year.

It has gotten so big that one of every 15 titles published in the United States is done by an AuthorHouse company.
