Oct. 4--LEBANON -- PPL Corp. and the Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority landfill on Wednesday marked the opening of a $6 million renewable energy plant that eventually will generate enough electricity from methane gas produced by trash to power up to 2,500 homes.

The plant, which began generating electricity about two weeks ago, will produce up to 3,200 kilowatts per hour, or about 24 million kilowatt-hours per year, said Mike Kroboth, president of PPL Renewable Energy. That is the equivalent of 378,000 barrels of oil, he said.

The impact on the environment is equivalent to taking 27,000 cars off the highway or planting 38,000 acres of trees, ...
