Earthquakes, one of nature's most unpredictable phenomena, have been responsible for tremendous loss of life and property around the world in recent years.
Here in the United States, the state of California has been hit particularly hard by earthquakes. in 1994, Northridge, Calif. suffered more than $9 billion in insured property losses when an earthquake registering 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the area.
