With the increased use of medical interventions and cesarean sections, fewer US women with low-risk pregnancies have access to a normal childbirth. By definition, hospitals are for sick people who need medical intervention. The one exception is the healthy woman with a low-risk pregnancy who goes to a hospital to give birth. Six care practices that support normal birth, according to the Lamaze Institute for Normal Birth, are as follows: labor begins on its own; freedom of movement throughout labor; continuous labor support from a doula or trained staff; no routine interventions; non-supine (e.g., upright or side-lying) positions for birth; and no separation of mother and ...
