Controversy exists over the use of black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa or Actaea racemosa) in the context of breast cancer. There are basically two concerns. The first is whether a woman with an existing oestrogen-sensitive breast carcinoma can safely use black cohosh. The second concern is whether the regular use of black cohosh by a healthy woman will increase her risk of subsequently developing breast cancer. Both issues received considerable publicity in 2003 after the American Association for Cancer Research released the findings of an animal study.
