Back in 2004, Pope John Paul II beatified Emperor Karl I, the last monarch of Austria's old Hapsburg dynasty. In a sense, the gesture marked payment of a historical debt, because from the time of the Counter Reformation no nation had defended Catholicism in Europe more ferociously than Austria under the Hapsburgs. Robust Catholic devotion was simply the air one breathed. (Karl himself set the tone, proposing to Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma in front of the Blessed Sacrament.)
