An untreatable virus that dissolves its victims' vital organs in days, Ebola has claimed more than 500 lives in the East African rain forest. Researchers feared an outbreak in the United States.
The news came in April - as the science-fiction thriller Outbreak opened in the nation's theaters - that the Ebola virus, one of the world's deadliest, had resurfaced.
Ebola is a hemorrhagic virus that causes high fever, chills, internal and external bleeding and subsequent organ failure. It is known to be transmitted through blood and other bodily fluids.
