September jobless rate inches up.

Oct. 6--The nation's jobless rate rose a notch to 4.7 percent in September, up from 4.6 percent the previous month and the highest rate since August 2006, the Labor Department reported yesterday in a report that showed continuing declines in the U.S. housing sector.

A separate survey on hiring showed employers added 110,000 people to their payrolls last month, roughly in line with forecasts. The big news on payrolls was a hefty upward revision to the numbers in July and August, where the labor department uncovered an additional 118,000 jobs.
