WORCESTER - For decades, the 900-pound bell atop the old St. Vincent Hospital campus on Vernon Hill pealed three times a day - calling residents of the working-class neighborhood to prayer and soothingly reminding them that medical help, if needed, was just around the corner.
When the hospital complex moved downtown in 2000, it was left at the old facility; it looked like the bell was headed for a scrap yard when efforts began earlier this year to demolish the seven-story structure.
